It is regarded as one of Tolstoy's finest literary achievements. 3. Count Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy, born on 9 September 1828 and died on 20 November 1910 usually referred to in English as Leo Tolstoy, was a Russian writer who is regarded as one of the greatest authors of all time. He received multiple nominations for Nobel Prize in Literature every year from 1902 to 1906. 4. and nominations for Nobel Peace Prize in 1901, 1902 and 1910, and the fact that he never won is a major Nobel prize controversy. 5. In the 1870s Tolstoy experienced a profound moral crisis, followed by what he regarded as an equally profound spiritual awakening, as outlined in his non-fiction work A Confession. 6. Tolstoy said War and Peace is "not a novel, even less is it a poem, and still less a historical chronicle." Large sections, especially the later chapters, are philosophical discussion rather than narrative. 7. War and Peace begins in the Russian city of St. Petersburg in 1805, as fear of Napoleon’s ongoing war making begins to set in. 8. Most of the characters are introduced at a party, including Pierre Bezukhov, Andrey Bolkonsky, and the Kuragin and Rostov families. 9. Much of the novel focuses on the interactions between the Bezukhovs, Bolkonskys, and the Rostovs. 10. War and peace divided in 4 books and its Epilogue has 2 parts. In the first book, The novel begins in July 1805 in Saint Petersburg, at a soirée given by Anna Pavlovna Scherer,the maid of honour and confidante to the dowager Empress Maria Feodorovna 11. Book Two begins with Nikolai Rostov briefly returning on leave to Moscow accompanied by his friend Denisov, his officer from his Pavlograd Regiment. 12. In book 3, Natasha manages to persevere in Moscow through this dark period. And in the book 4, The Rostovs have waited until the last minute to abandon Moscow 13. there are some war scenes in the book.
